In today’s American English, hundreds (perhaps thousands) of these noun-to-verb conversions exist. In addition, nouns can also be used as adjectives. Adjectives, in turn, are sometimes used as adverbs. This new flexibility certainly provides a richer language, but it also provides headaches to translators, interpreters, and those learning English as a second language. Let us look at some examples. Though English is the primary language of many countries— the United States, England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the Falkland Islands, Bermuda, and many other countries in the Caribbean—the variations from place to place are humongous. You only have to listen to a street conversation in Singapore—a country in which English and Chinese vie for lingual primacy—to realize the huge number of differences in English usage. The English spoken in most English-speaking countries has its roots in England; its most polished version, once referred to as “The Queen’s English,” gave way to another standard, BBC English, which in recent years has somewhat loosened, to say the least.
