For example, Selfridges Ltd was formed on American business practice, theories and ideals in 1909, and in the following year the first of the 950 Woolworth stores was opened. 55 By the outbreak of the First World War, then, American business interests had permeated—and for the most part successfully—a wide section of British industry and commerce. At the same time, continuing its earlier pattern of selectivity, the investment was almost entirely confined to the newer fields of production where the commercial supremacy of the United States was at that time most pronounced.
To the best of our knowledge these firms, at the time of our enquiry employed between them 90–95 per cent of the total labour force of American firms in Great Britain. No important US company is believed to have been omitted from our analysis,9 and in each case the number and kind of firms giving information of a kind dealt with in this and subsequent chapters has been sufficiently representative of the total to allow reasonably accurate estimates to be made of the position as a whole. In an attempt to measure and assess the extent and significance of American participation in British industry, we have taken as our criteria three main variables—(1) total labour force, (2) value of total output and (3) estimated share of UK production—all for the years 1953 and for, where applicable, 1939.
